Star tenor Rolando Villazon returns to The Royal Opera as the epitome of the despairing Romantic poet, Werther.

Goethe's original novel was a European sensation in its day, and Massenet's opera brings out all the intensity of its portrayal of the unrequited love and dashed hopes - atmospheric, tuneful and poignant. Antonio Pappano, Music Director of The Royal Opera, conducted this stylish production by director Benoit Jacquot when it was new in 2004. He conducts again for this first revival, and with a wonderful cast that includes two audience favourites, Sophie Koch and Eri Nakamura. The lyrical French style that is so characteristic of Massenet's music has increasingly featured at the Royal Opera House, and the opportunity to enjoy this mature work of the composer is a complement to last Season's Manon and this Season's Cendrillon.

For all lovers of French opera, fine singing, melodious music and emotionally arresting drama, Werther is an ideal choice.
